Art with Artists
Art with Artists is a curriculum based art program taught in the public school system by members of the league. This program was born of a desire to fulfill a need for arts education in the public school system. Our mission, Children’s health and education for a stronger community, is echoed through this program.
Artists of different genre’s, time periods and heritage are chosen. Members participate in every aspect of the program, including lesson plans, developing examples, gathering supplies and teaching lesson.
Lesson plans are developed geared toward children from kindergarten to fifth grade. Each plan outlines the style of the artist along with an explanation of technique and an example of the work. Each child is then free to express themselves in this same style with their own work. We use a variety of artistic tools including: chalk, paint, clay and even bingo blotters!
The children have responded with overwhelming excitement about the program and look forward to our return bi-monthly.
This program will be in the school for one more year. After the ’07-’08 year, we will transition all existing lesson plans to a kit-based format that will allow more children to participate. Teachers, parents, even PTO groups may check out the kits and teach the lessons. Members will fundraise to replenish the supplies in each kit.
Coosa Valley Youth Services
The Junior League of Anniston developed a partnership with Coosa Valley Youth Services many years ago. This agency provides disciplinary training to adolescent and teen boys and girls in our region. The program is a positive alternative to incarceration for troubled youth. Participants learn many lessons during their stay at Camp Lewis including team building exercises and the importance of respect for self and others.
Our members assist with graduation ceremonies by providing punch and cookies for the cadets and their families. The ceremony is the culmination of their time at Camp Lewis and many of the cadets are positively changed forever. It’s a moving experience to witness the growth and evolution of these students. The league is honored to be a part of educating the youth in this program.
